CALL TO ACTION!
Join us on Wednesday, March 11th, outside Holyrood"
We imagine most of us have never protested in our lives, BUT OUR TIME HAS COME!
On Wednesday 11th March, the Rural Affairs and Islands Committee will be meeting Cabinet Secretary Mairi Gougeon at the Scottish Parliament. Along with many other groups and communities across Scotland, we are calling for a moratorium on the expansion of open net salmon farms – both the establishment of new, and the enlargement of existing.
We are determined that any moratorium MUST include semi closed containment – such as is being proposed for the 8000tonne farm here, on Loch Linnhe. The industry will disingenuously refer to this technology as “closed” – but it is far from it! Only a fraction of the waste (including any chemicals, uneaten food, nitrogen and ammonia) would be extracted. The developer’s KC (at the Loch Long Appeal hearing) had to admit that – yet they continue to claim unattainable figures.
8000T of salmon is, by weight, roughly equivalent to 11,000 cows being farmed under our waters…just think about it…WE CANNOT LET THIS HAPPEN! If this farm had been in situ when Storm Amy hit last year, the disastrous escape of 75000 farmed salmon from Mowi’s farm up the loch would seem merely a sideshow.
If you care about the future of our beautiful Loch Linnhe and the increasingly fragile survival of our Wild Atlantic Salmon, come and join us in a peaceful and lawful protest, gathering at 7.45am outside Holyrood on the 11th March.
You may also book a seat in the Chamber to follow proceedings from 9am – 1pm at Scottish Parliament Tickets.
